“I’m just expressing how I feel inside, which is really no particular way because everyday it changes…”
The above quote comes from Jaden Smith who recently became the face of the women’s wear for Louis Vuitton (Read Story Here). This quote highlights the growing issue we have in today’s society and I wanted to spend a few minutes talking about it. I’ll break it down into three easy parts to digest.
1. The Problem – Society is letting emotion lead their behavior.
Turn on the news, read a magazine or digest any sort of media and you’ll find people consistently letting their decisions be geared by emotion. Jaden Smith spoke the truth when he said he’s just expressing how he feels. That’s the entire problem we’re facing as a society and here’s a short list to help illustrate the point.
- Gender Neutrality (People let what they “feel” like being from day-to-day dictate what gender they’ll be.)
- Gay Marriage (It’s all about love and emotions.)
- Abortion (They don’t “feel” like being a mother. They can’t handle it. They’re not “feeling” like they’re ready to be a mom.)
- Gun Control (They don’t “feel” like we need guns so they want to take everybody’s.)
I left one off the list, so I could explain it a little more in detail. It doesn’t have much to do with Jaden Smith or Louis Vuitton, but it’s important and connected the the trending feeling-based decision making our society is growing more accustomed to. If you haven’t been living under a rock, you’ve most likely heard about all the shootings that have been happening lately. The question I like to present to the feeling-based decision making crowd is ‘How do you draw a line for letting a society do whatever “feels” right?’
How do you draw a line for letting a society do whatever “feels” right?
When a society turns their back on God and says that He doesn’t exist (by their actions against Him) what do they expect? A self-guided moral compass is broken and will vary from person to person. The feeling-based decision making that Jaden Smith and others are using is ill-guided and will fail. We cannot teach a society to make decisions based off emotion and then get upset when that emotional decision isn’t one we like (aka the shootings).
2. The Contrast
God is a God of order and never changes. True joy and happiness doesn’t come from being a male one day and a female the next. It also doesn’t come from getting married. It comes from God and Him alone.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13 (NIV)
The Scriptures have been around for thousands of years and have withstood the test of time. It’s through a relationship with God that we can find peace and value in ourselves that the world is so desperately trying to grasp. It’s not through ourselves that we will ever be happy, it’s through Him who loves us. It’s God who can fill that void that every person on earth has. It’s not what you can do, it’s what He can do. The light we all are looking for resides in Jesus Christ. It’s through believing in Him and accepting Him as our Lord and Savior that we can find peace and love we desperately need.
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
John 12:46 (NIV)
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
As the world continues to struggle in searching for meaning in life and allowing themselves to be steered by emotional responses, cling to the promises of God. He knew you’d be exactly where you are today before you were born. He knows the number of hairs on your head and loves you.
