There are seasons in life that leave us asking questions we never thought we’d have to ask.
Why did this happen?
Why didn’t God stop it?
Will things ever be the same again?
Whether it’s a broken relationship, a devastating diagnosis, the loss of someone we love, or simply the weight of disappointment, most of us eventually find ourselves standing in the ashes of plans that didn’t work out the way we hoped.
The encouraging truth is this:
God has never been intimidated by ashes.
Throughout Scripture, He repeatedly demonstrates His ability to restore what appears beyond repair.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
Notice what Paul doesn’t say.
He doesn’t tell us that every circumstance is good.
He tells us that God is able to work through every circumstance for our good. That distinction changes everything.
Sometimes the Hardest Fires Aren’t the Ones We Can See
When we hear the word fire, we often picture flames consuming buildings or forests.
But many of life’s deepest fires are invisible.
They’re the arguments that slowly erode a marriage.
The fear that keeps us awake at night.
The guilt over mistakes we can’t undo.
The disappointment that lingers after prayers seem to go unanswered.
These are the fires that quietly test our faith.
It’s often in those moments that we’re tempted to believe God has forgotten us.
Yet Scripture paints a different picture.
Throughout the Bible, God consistently meets His people in difficult places—not after the trial is over, but while they’re walking through it.
God Often Does His Greatest Work in Difficult Seasons
One of the hardest lessons to learn is that God isn’t always trying to remove us from hardship immediately.
Sometimes He’s using hardship to shape us.
James writes:
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
James 1:2–3 (NKJV)
That doesn’t mean trials are enjoyable.
It means they can become meaningful.
Looking back over our lives, many of us can identify moments we never would have chosen—but also moments that strengthened our faith in ways comfort never could.
God doesn’t waste pain.
Forgiveness Is Often the Beginning of Healing
One of the most difficult things God asks us to do is forgive.
Not because the offense was small.
Not because justice doesn’t matter.
But because bitterness slowly burns the person holding it.
Forgiveness doesn’t erase consequences.
It doesn’t pretend nothing happened.
Instead, it releases our desire to carry the burden alone and entrusts justice to God.
Healing often begins long before circumstances change.
It begins when our hearts begin to surrender.

Maybe you’re walking through a difficult season today.

God is still writing it.
The ashes you’re standing in today may become the testimony you share tomorrow.
As Isaiah reminds us, God gives His people:
“…beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning…”

Hold onto that promise.
The God who restores broken hearts still restores them today.
